| Naworth Castle | ||||||||
Naworth Castle post dates Lanercost Priory built by the Dacre family during the fourteenth century. Through marriage the castle passed to the Howards and is now the home of Philip and Elizabeth Howard. Here the circa 1900 postcard shows little change has occurred to the appearance of the castle during the past century. |

This enlargement of the crest on the remains of the gatehouse shows two gryphons, first used by the de Veux family, holding the shield of Lord Thomas Dacre. Dacre scallop shells also figure in the crest. | |||||||
